Juneteenth and I am thinking about Samella Lewis
In a video post, I spoke about the reason why I started Pepper Scotch, but who made me believe it was possible to create an actual place for people to imagine a new digital paradigm was Samella Lewis.
Samella Lewis is a giant in the history of African-American art. She dedicated her professional life to supporting Black art and art history and audiences for Black art. A trained artist and art historian, Lewis created a publishing company, founded a gallery and then later a museum; she produced and distributed films. The breadth, inventiveness, and longevity of her projects, most launched between 1969 and 1978, is astonishing.
I learned about Samella Lewis from the lovely book, South of Pico: African American Artists in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s by Kellie Jones.
